Myths have always chased hypnosis and its healing offshoot, hypnotherapy. Some consider them to be some sort of magic while others hesitate to even recognize their existence. Following are some of the well known myths about hypnosis and the reality behind them.
Hypnosis has nothing to do with magic spells of any kind. It is a very simple technique, which can be understood without much difficulty with the help of psychology and other scientific procedures. The authenticity of hypnosis is doubted even by people who have seen it casting its spell on subjects. They believe that the people who have been under hypnosis are mentally not strong enough to withstand the influence of the practitioner. But that is not true at all. Hypnosis can in fact work on people who are mentally tough and are trying hard to block the spell.
That hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness is another myth that has been circulating for quite some time now. A hypnotized individual is fully alert of what is going on around him. That person is just in a relaxed state where the concentration levels are very high and the person can accept suggestions easily.
Another misconception, which has been circulated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can work on merely 5% of humans. The researchers are somewhat true in their own way, because they attempted hypnotising the group by the same hypnosis technique without considering individual differences in character and temperament. Hypnosis can’t be straight jacketed like that and clicks only if there are different approaches for different personality styles.
People also tend to equate hypnosis with meditation. But while hypnosis is an interaction technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and generally has nothing to do with communication. Similarly, a period of trance is also sometimes confused with hypnosis, which is not correct. Just like meditation, trance is a mental state, and it is not associated with communication in any manner, while the very basis of the hypnosis method is communication.
Another myth is that bodily and behavioural changes in a person are not possible through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is abnormal to the body. But by mentally conditioning an individual to give up addictive habits like eating too much and chain smoking, and by heightening one’s inspiration levels, hypnosis can usher in important physical alterations in an individual and ensure a healthier body.
If an individual believes in all the misconceptions that prevail regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t venture to participate in a hypnotic session, then he will himself burn the bridge to a happier and healthier life.
