Philadelphia Phillies’ slugger Ryan Howard has two years remaining on his current contract with the club, but the team had no interest in potentially losing him as a free agent. For that reason, the Phillies have worked out a hefty contract extension with Howard that will pay him an average $25 million a year for the next five years. The deal is the second richest in Major League baseball behind the New York Yankees’ shortstop Alex Rodriguez who pulls down a cool $27.5 million per season.

Howard spoke of his loyalty to the team as a primary reason that he accepted the deal without hesitation:

“That wasn’t a very hard decision.”

“I tell you what, it’s a great feeling to have that security and know where you’re going to be. I feel what I’ve been doing over the last couple of years, I feel pretty confident that down the road, I’ll be right where I want to be and still doing the same things.”

He then threw in a playful jab at the notoriously demanding Philadelphia fans:

“Hopefully there’s no riots taking place back in Philly.”

Even Philadelphia’s GM Ruben Amaro, Jr. was in a joking mood in announcing the deal:

“As part of this deal, he has agreed to buy a second home for me.”

He then gave a more serious take on Howard’s contract:

“We just felt it was good timing for us. We felt No. 1, he’s one of the elite offensive players in the game. We could have waited another year and a half or so and dealt with it later on, but the fact of the matter is we decided he is that important to our organization and to our club and to our future.”

Howard’s agent Casey Close was also upbeat:

“This is a very good contract for him. The reason he felt the time was right was he loves his teammates, he loves the city. He wanted to be a part of something special for a long time to come.”

As was team manager Charlie Manuel:

“This is absolutely great. We signed Ryan Howard quite a few years ago and that means we’re keeping him. He’s one of our guys, he is a Phillie. It’s big for our team. That’s what you set out for. He’s very worthy of it. He is a great player and he is going to continue to be a great player for a while. Everything about it’s good.”

There is some risk involved for the ball club-despite a team option for the 2017 season they’re banking that Howard will remain a high level offensive player. The size of the contract, if nothing else, would make him almost impossible to trade should the team decide to go in a different direction.

Matthew Stafford has yet to play a regular season NFL game and hes already the Detroit Lions starting quarterback. First year coach Jim Schwartz named Stafford as his starter for the teams opening game of the NFL regular season against the New Orleans Saints. Stafford beat out veteran Daunte Culpepper for the spot, though Schwartz went out of his way to stress that the rookie won the job as opposed to Culpepper losing it.

In announcing Stafford as the starting QB for the Lions, Schwartz made clear that hes very confident with his personnel at the position:

“I’ve had a lot of very tough decisions in the last few days — guys making the 53-man roster or not making it — but none more difficult than at quarterback. We announced to our team this morning that Matt Stafford is going to be our starting quarterback.”

“I’m very, very comfortable with the quarterback position here, not just one and two, but also three. What made this decision difficult was that I think we can win with Daunte Culpepper, I think we can with Matt Stafford, and I think we can win with Drew Stanton.

Stafford indicated that he didnt know he’d be the starter until Schwartz gave him the word:

“I definitely thought I was going to be the guy, but as competitive as Daunte is, I’m sure he thought he was going to be the guy, too. Coach Schwartz called me in this morning and told me, and I went out and practiced with the first team. That was exciting.”

Stafford stressed that hes not just happy to be in the NFL”he wants to win:

“I’m going to try to win football games. I think, just like everyone else on this team, that we can go out on Sunday and be competitive against the Saints and give ourselves a chance to win the game. That’s our job.”

Schwartz said that he plans to give his quarterback the opportunity to work through rookie mistakes:

“This isn’t an internship. This isn’t a trial basis. He’s our starting quarterback. We said that, to win the job, he had to be ready, and he had to be our best quarterback, and that’s what he has shown.”

He continued with praise for Culpepper:

“Daunte Culpepper is back — there’s no doubt in my mind and there’s no doubt around this league. He’s going to be back as a starting quarterback in this league, and with a high level of success.”

Culpepper didnt speak to the media, but that wasnt a surprise since he never speaks to the media. Stafford, meanwhile, had some kind words for his backup:

“I’m sure it is tough for him, but Daunte’s been great for me and he will continue to be. I can’t think of a better guy to learn from and to have in my corner.”

The Lions will look for their first regular season win in over a year as they start the NFL regular season at New Orleans on Sunday. Theyll play the following two games at home against the Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins.

The UFC is of borderline relevance in Japan. This isn’t to disparage the UFC, which has done a great job growing MMA in North America and parts of Europe. It’s an effort to put Dana White’s claims of Zuffa’s inevitable worldwide dominance into perspective. Without traction in the #2 fightsport market in the world, UFC’s hopes for ‘world domination’ are doomed to failure.

Here are the three essential qualities for doing business in Japan, along with an analysis of what they mean to Zuffa’s efforts to build the UFC brand there:

Group Orientation/Collaboration: Japanese businessmen are notorious for sublimating their individual talents and personalities to the greater good of the group. Furthermore, Japanese business places a great emphasis on teamwork and collaboration. For US businesses seeking to enter the market, a certain degree of partnership with existing Japanese firms is almost de rigueur. MMA fans can see the biggest problem Zuffa may face from a mile away–their reticence to enter into co-promotional agreements. While their public disdain for co-promotion was a major sticking point in their negotiations with Fedor Emelianenko, it may very well be a case that they didn’t want to do business with M-1 Global. To a certain extent, its difficult to blame them. On the other hand, the UFC worked with Germany’s largest concert promoter (MLK) to enter that market with a fair degree of success. They’d be well advised to seek some sort of a partnership similar to their German initiative to help smooth their way into the Japanese market.

Hierarchy: Japanese culture, including business, is almost ridiculously hierarchical. The societal reverence for age, experience and accomplishment in Japan is well known, and that’s often a difficult concept for American companies and businessmen to grasp. US businesses love mavericks and Horatio Alger stories. That accounts for much of the business medias fascination with Dana White and they’re quick to celebrate how a former aerobics instructor is now the most powerful man in MMA and the driving force of a billion dollar company. That storyline doesn’t play as well in Japan, however. One approach would be for White to take a back seat in UFC efforts to promote in Japan in favor of Zuffa co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta and perhaps the widely respected former Nevada Athletic Commission director Marc Ratner.

Respect: Even among seedy elements like fight promoters–and even the underworld–respect in business dealings is essential in Japan. In a typical Japanese business deal, the first few meetings aren’t intended for any substantive decision making to take place. Instead, they’re used for evaluation of your professionalism or, as the Japanese like to put it, “to determine your suitability for conducting business with”. Considering that Dana Whites first introduction to the PRIDE staff and to the Japanese fight public was a press conference where he made the statement–more in reference to the proposed bouts between UFC and PRIDE fighters than anything else–”We’re going to kick your ass”. At that moment, PRIDE as a promotion died. The people that worked for PRIDE had no interest in helping White profit from the promotion. More significantly, he became little more than a clown to the Japanese public–like “Money From Government Grants” shill Mathew Lesko without the funny suit. To succeed in Japan, the UFC must realize that they’re not considered a major fight promotion in that country. They must understand that they’ve got to win over a skeptical public, but before that they have to win over a skeptical Japanese business community. They might be able to run their company like Tony Soprano ran the garbage collection business in the US, but that approach applied to Japan will leave them exactly where they are now–on the outside looking in at the huge, fight crazy economy.

Dana White’s fanciful stories about Yakzua gangsters out of Quentin Tarantino movies might amuse his sycophants in the MMA media, but countless US companies including fight promotions have done business successfully and profitably in Japan. Properly promoting stars like Yoshihiro Akiyama will help, but the only way that Zuffa will be able to become a factor in the worlds #2 MMA market is to do what every other company has done to be successful there–learn how to understand the Japanese approach to doing business, and play by their rules.

When golf legend Jack Nicklaus was still a young upstart in the sport and only starting to tear up PGA courses, legend Bobby Jones commented following ‘The Golden Bear’s”65 Masters win that “he plays a game with which I am not familiar”. Following his absolute destruction of Rashad Evans in the main event of UFC 98, there’s likely a few MMA fighters saying the same thing about the new light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida who made it look easy en route to a 2nd round TKO victory.

The fight started slowly, with each man trying to get a feel for his opponent and wait him out to see who blinked first. Late in the first round, Machida went on offense with frightening suddenness, flooring Evans with a nice straight right hand. Evans was able to recover and survive, but it only delayed the inevitable as Machida used another right hand to send his opponent down again. Evans gamely tried to fight back, but a final right hand from the Shotokan Karate master left him out cold.

After the fight UFC announcer Joe Rogan proclaimed the start of the Machida era and this is not just mere hyperbole. Machida is unlike any fighter before him, rooted in mastery of traditional martial arts but with the versatility of a modern MMA competitor. He’s essentially a Mortal Kombat character come to life–in a more realistic cross disciplinary comparison he shares many of the same characteristics as boxing great Floyd Mayweather, Jr. as he combines insane handspeed, underrated stopping power and nearly impenetrable defense into an unorthodox and extremely lethal package. Like Mayweather, hes a tough opponent to prepare for as there’s simply no way to replicate his skill set in sparring. In another similarity with boxing’s recent pound for pound king, Machida has been bred to fight since birth. His father is a first generation Japanese –Brazilian and a Shotokan Karate legend, Yoshizo Machida. He began training in his fathers discipline at the age of 3 and by the time he was 12 years old had earned a black belt.

The comparisons with the insanely talented but equally insanely arrogant Mayweather end when the final bell sounds. Outside of the cage, Machida is a modest and respectful gentleman who is quick to give credit to his father and his karate teachers for his MMA success. He spent most of his UFC 98 postfight interview not singing his own praises, but imploring others to strive to realize their dreams.

An odd trivia note about Machida serves as further repudiation for MMA neophytes who think that the sports kinship with pro wrestling began with Brock Lesnar: Machida was discovered by Japanese wrestling legend Antonio Inoki, and became something of his protege. He trained for some time at the New Japan Pro Wrestling dojo in Tokyo and made his MMA debut on a NJPW card in 2003, defeating Pancrase veteran Kengo Watanabe. For a time, Inoki had designs on pushing Machida as his predecessor, but his success in shoot fights quickly opened up other doors.

Perhaps the most frightening thing about Machida is that hes only now reaching his full potential as an MMA fighter. In other words, hes only going to get better which is a scary prospect for opponents given the fact that hes never lost in MMA competition. Early in his UFC career he had a reputation as a boring fighter, but in his recent bouts hes shown a downright lethal ability to end fights. He stopped Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at UFC 79 with an arm triangle choke, and blitzed Evans and previous foe Thiago Alves with punishing punching combinations en route to TKO victories. The so called boring fighter has in the process earned two UFC knockout of the night bonuses by virtue of his evolving power punching skills.

Machida will very likely face Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson at some point and its difficult to see him faring much differently than Evans did. One thing working in ‘Rampage’s’ favor is his greater experience and a resume filled with high level opponents of various fighting styles. Still, everyone comes back to the fundamental reality that no one has ever really seen a fighter quite like Machida before.

In the co-main event of the evening, Matt Hughes defeated Matt Serra by unanimous decision to gain the upperhand in their long running feud. It was a surprisingly entertaining fight, with Serra taking the first round with his power punching before Hughes used his takedown and ground control abilities to win rounds two and three. The two men embraced after the fight so, for now at least, their well known dislike for one another that began during their stint as rival coaches on The Ultimate Fighter may have ebbed. After the fight, Hughes backed off his previous talk of retirement after this matchup and clearly indicated that hed like to keep competing in the UFC.

Internet marketing is intensely competitive, which most people learn only after they have been scammed or their efforts have failed. Significant learning is required to make your endeavor a long term success. Internet marketing is highly competitive, since all that is required to start an Internet marketing business is an Internet connection and a computer. There are practically no barriers to entry. As the Internet reaches new locations and markets, competition increases exponentially.

The answer is simple: leverage (and something called the Stupid Simple System but more on that later). If you are not familiar with this concept it is simply making sure that you are able to get more results on a shorter amount of time. For example, outsourcing part of your business (like website creation or article writing) is a form of leverage. While the outsourced tasks take care of themselves, your time is freed up so that you can move on to more value-added activities (like researching your next niche or doing some in-depth keyword research).

However, one form of leverage is more powerful than any other at any time. You can access this leverage by learning as much as possible from the true experts, to give you an advantage that no one can take away.

The good news is that this leverage, in the form of knowledge and ready-made marketing systems, is available to you. We will introduce you to the Stupid Simple System below. But the bad news is that this Stupid Simple System is also available to your competition, BUT they have not found it yet. This gives you the advantage, at least until they find out about the Stupid Simple System also.

You can’t get results if you don’t act, and doing the wrong thing is no better than doing nothing. You need to start with the Stupid Simple System now if you’re ready to make money; if not, don’t bother. You might succeed without it, but that’s not likely.

For those few who are ready, we would like to introduce you to a marketing superstar who was generous enough to pass to what he knew to us in the form of his Stupid Simple System. He has been in the game for years and is a true expert at what he does. The Stupid Simple System is how he has literally made millions in the internet marketing game.

You will want to check out the Stupid Simple System Bonus page to find out what it is all about. There are also some great free resources and free bonuses at this site as well.

As you’re considering studying a course to qualify for an MCSE, it’s likely you’ll come into one of two categories. You might be ready to enter the computer sector, and you’ve found the industry has many opportunities for men and women who are commercially qualified. Instead you may be an IT professional looking to formalise your skill set with an MCSE.

As you do your searches, you will discover training providers that compromise their offerings by not upgrading their courses to the latest Microsoft version. Steer clear of training companies like these as it will create challenges for you when it comes to exams. If you are studying the wrong version, it will be hard to pass.

The focus of a training company should primarily be on the best thing for their clients, and everyone involved should have a passion for getting things right. Studying for a career isn’t just about the certification – it should initially look at helping you work out the best course of action for you.

If there’s any chance you’ll be enrolling with a certification company who is still pushing ‘in-centre workshop days’ as a benefit of their course, then consider these difficulties encountered by the majority of students:

* All that travelling – multiple trips and usually hundreds of miles each time.

* If, like many of us, you work, then weekday only events represent a difficulty in getting time off. You’re usually having to deal with 2-3 days at a time as well.

* Usually, we find four weeks vacation allowance doesn’t go very far. Take away a good 50 percent of that for study workshops and you’ll experience even more problems.

* Workshop days often get way too big.

* Often trainees are trying to maintain a quick pace, others want a more steady pace and not be forced to adopt an uncomfortable speed for them. This breeds tension and bad atmosphere in most workshops.

* And let’s not ignore the increased cost of driving or accommodation either. Often, this will cost a lot of money – from hundreds to thousands. Do the maths yourself – you’ll get a shock.

* Don’t risk the possibility of getting passed-over for a lift up the ladder or income boosts because of your studies.

* It’s not unusual to find that, at times, it’s uncomfortable to raise questions in a room full of other trainees – because none of us wants to look like we don’t understand.

* For those who have work away from home, it’s a fact of life that days in-centre can become awkward to keep up – and yet, they’ve been paid for in advance.

Why not watch on-screen and be taught by tutors one-to-one in ready-made modules, taking them at a time that’s convenient for you and you alone.

Study at home on your computer or why not in the garden on a laptop. Any questions; then get onto the live 24×7 support (that should’ve been packaged with any technical type of training.)

You don’t have to worry about any note-taking – all the lessons and background info are laid out on a plate. If you need to cover something again, you’ve got it all.

Though this won’t remove each and every issue, it definitely removes stress and makes things simpler. And you’ve reduced hassle, travel and costs.

Often, folks don’t really get what information technology means. It’s ground-breaking, exciting, and means you’re doing your bit in the gigantic wave of technology that will change our world over the next few decades.

We’re only just starting to see just how technology is going to shape our lives. Technology and the web will massively transform the way we see and interact with the world as a whole over the coming decades.

If money is way up on your list of priorities, you will be happy to know that the income on average of most men and women in IT is significantly higher than with the rest of the economy.

There is a considerable national demand for qualified IT professionals. Also, as growth in the industry shows little sign of contracting, it seems this will be the case for the significant future.

Were it not for a steady stream of qualified PC and network support workers, business in the United Kingdom (and indeed in most countries) could well be brought to its knees. We have a constantly increasing requirement for technically able people to support both the systems and the users themselves. The world’s need for such skilled and qualified members of the workforce is growing at an impressive rate, as everywhere we work becomes progressively more dependent upon technology.

Consider the following points and pay great regard to them if you believe that over-used sales technique about ‘guaranteeing’ exams sounds like a benefit to the student:

Certainly it isn’t free – you are paying for it – it’s just been included in your package price.

Those who enter their exams one by one, paying as they go are in a much stronger position to qualify at the first attempt. They’re thoughtful of their investment and so are more inclined to be ready for the task.

Do your exams somewhere close to home and look for the very best offer you can at the time.

Why tie up your cash (or borrow more than you need) for examinations when there’s absolutely nothing that says you have to? A great deal of money is made because training colleges are getting paid upfront for exams – and then hoping that you won’t take them all.

You should fully understand that re-takes through training course providers with an ‘Exam Guarantee’ are always heavily controlled. You’ll be required to sit pre-tests until you’ve demonstrated an excellent ability to pass.

With average prices for VUE and Pro-metric tests costing in the region of 112 pounds in this country, the most cost-effective way to cover the cost is by paying when you need them. There’s no sense in throwing away maybe a thousand pounds extra at the start of your studies. A commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools are actually the key to your success.

Looking around, we find a glut of job availability in the IT industry. Deciding which one could be right for yourself is generally problematic.

Consequently, without any background in the IT market, how could you possibly know what a particular IT employee actually does day-to-day? And of course decide on which educational path is the most likely for your success.

Often, the key to unlocking this question properly stems from a full discussion of several areas:

* What nature of person you are – the tasks that you get enjoyment from, and conversely – what you definitely don’t enjoy.

* Why you’re looking at starting in the IT industry – maybe you want to triumph over a long-held goal such as working for yourself for instance.

* Is the money you make further up on your list of priorities than other requirements.

* With many, many areas to train for in computing – you’ll need to gain some background information on what sets them apart.

* It makes sense to understand what differentiates the myriad of training options.

To cut through the industry jargon, and uncover the most viable option for your success, have a good talk with an industry expert and advisor; someone that understands the commercial reality whilst covering all the qualifications.

Several companies have a handy Job Placement Assistance program, to assist your search for your first position. Ultimately it’s not as difficult as you may be led to believe to get employment – assuming you’re well trained and qualified; the growing UK skills shortage sees to that.

Having said that, it’s important to have advice and support about your CV and interviews though; and we’d recommend any student to work on polishing up their CV as soon as they start a course – don’t wait until you’ve qualified.

Being considered a ‘maybe’ is better than being rejected. A decent number of junior jobs are given to people (sometimes when they’ve only just got going.)

The top companies to get you a new position are generally local IT focused employment agencies. Because they make their money when they’ve found you a job, they’re perhaps more focused on results.

Various trainees, it seems, spend evenings and weekends on their training and studies (for years sometimes), only to give up at the first hurdle when looking for their first job. Market yourself… Do your best to get yourself known. Don’t think a job’s just going to jump out in front of you.

Make sure you don’t get caught-up, as many people do, on the training process. Training is not an end in itself; this is about employment. Focus on the end-goal.

It’s a terrible situation, but the majority of trainees start out on programs that sound great from the prospectus, but which provides a job that is of no interest. Talk to many college graduates to see what we mean.

You need to keep your eye on what you want to achieve, and build your study action-plan from that – avoid getting them back-to-front. Stay focused on the end-goal – making sure you’re training for something that’ll reward you for many long and fruitful years.

Always seek guidance and advice from a skilled advisor, even if you have to pay – it’s usually much cheaper and safer to discover early on whether a chosen track will suit, instead of discovering after two full years that you’re doing entirely the wrong thing and have to return to the start of another program.

Anybody thinking about training for the IT industry will soon realise that there are a huge amount of choices available to them. Before starting a training program, look for a training provider that has advisors, so you can be fully informed on the type of work your new knowledge will help you to get. You could uncover job roles you hadn’t considered before.

There are so many directions you can go in. Some people need User Skills from Microsoft, others want career skills such as courses on Networking, Programming, Databases or Web Design – and all can be catered for. But don’t rush into it, don’t just guess. It’s much better to talk to a company who has experience of the IT economy, and can help you arrive at the right destination.

Today, there are many easy-to-use and sensibly priced options around that will give you everything you need.

One interesting way that colleges make more money is by adding exam fees upfront to the cost of a course and presenting it as a guarantee for your exams. This sounds impressive, but is it really:

Patently it’s not free – you’re still paying for it – it’s just been wrapped up in the price of the package.

Those who enter their exams one by one, funding them one at a time are far more likely to pass first time. They’re thoughtful of their investment and take the necessary steps to ensure they are ready.

Sit the exam somewhere close to home and go for the best offer you can find when you’re ready.

Why tie up your cash (or borrow more than you need) for exam fees when there was no need to? A lot of profit is secured by training companies getting money in early for exam fees – and banking on the fact that many won’t be taken.

It’s worth noting, with the majority of Exam Guarantees – the company controls how often and when you can re-take the exam. You will have to demonstrate an excellent pass-rate before they’ll approve a re-take.

Splashing out often many hundreds of pounds extra on an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is foolish – when consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software is what will get you through.

OK, why is it better to gain qualifications from the commercial sector as opposed to more traditional academic qualifications taught at schools and Further Education colleges?

Industry is of the opinion that for mastery of skill sets for commercial use, official accreditation from companies such as Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA is closer to the mark commercially – at a far reduced cost both money and time wise.

They do this by honing in on the particular skills that are needed (alongside a relevant amount of related knowledge,) as opposed to spending months and years on the background non-specific minutiae that degrees in computing can get bogged down in – to pad out the syllabus.

Put yourself in the employer’s position – and you needed to take on someone with a very particular skill-set. Which is the most straightforward: Pore through loads of academic qualifications from various applicants, trying to establish what they know and which commercial skills have been attained, or select a specialised number of commercial certifications that specifically match what you’re looking for, and draw up from that who you want to speak to. You can then focus on how someone will fit into the team at interview – rather than on the depth of their technical knowledge.

The old fashioned style of teaching, using textbooks and whiteboards, is often a huge slog for most of us. If you’re nodding as you read this, check out study materials that are multimedia based.

Many years of research has repeatedly confirmed that becoming involved with our studies, to utilise all our senses, will more likely produce memories that are deeper and longer-lasting.

Learning is now available in the form of CD and DVD ROM’s, so everything is learned directly from your own PC. Through video streaming, you will be able to see the instructor presenting exactly how something is done, with some practice time to follow – via the interactive virtual lab’s.

You really need to look at courseware examples from the company you’re considering. It’s essential they incorporate video, demonstrations and various interactive elements.

Select CD and DVD ROM based physical training media whenever you can. Thus avoiding all the issues associated with broadband ‘downtime’ or slow-speeds.

It’s essential to have authorised exam simulation and preparation programs included in your course.

Due to the fact that many examination boards in IT are American, you must be prepared for the way exams are phrased. You can’t practice properly by just answering any old technical questions – they need to be in the proper exam format.

Simulated exams can be enormously valuable for confidence building – so that when you come to take your actual exams, you will be much more relaxed.
